学生缺少课外阅读的现象早已引起有关方面的重视，但情况并无改观，而且近年来问题越来越严重，究其原因主要有以下几点。
一、没时间，没精力。多数学生抱怨课业负担重，考试压力大，整日忙于应付大大小小的考试，无心、无力、无暇顾及课外阅读。
二、家长，老师的反对。家长老师最关心的是学生的考试成绩，阅读课外书籍被视为不务正业，或受到严厉批评或书籍被没收。情况严重的连阅读报刊、杂志的权利也被剥夺。
三、没兴趣。有的学生能忙里偷闲读点东西，但主要为放松消遣，愿意读点通俗读物，对于严肃读物或经典书籍觉得疏远、隔膜，读起来费劲，没兴趣。
四、不知如何读。有的学生明白读书的重要，渴望读点好书，但面对书海感到茫然，不知选择什么书来读，怎样读，不少学生尝试过后觉得无成就感，于是又放弃了。
中学生课外阅读的现状是反常的，也是十分令人担忧的。广泛阅读是学生求知的天性，也是学生们学习的权利，更是健康成长的需要。我们说中学阶段是读书的最佳时间，不仅因为此时更益于接受知识，更因为这个阶段的学习上的欠缺，是终生无法弥补的，尤其是对学生的思想发展，影响就更大了。一本好书能照亮人生方向。缺乏人类的优秀文化营养的滋养，缺乏健康精神思想的导引，人生势必在混沌与精神贫乏中度过。我们再也不能漠视中学生精神生活匮乏的现状了，应该努力创造条件改变这种局面。

The lack of student extra-curricular reading has long been a phenomenon of great importance to the parties concerned, the situation has not changed, but the problem is getting worse in recent years, the main reason for the following points.
